Who will be a voice for the youth corps members? #ProtectTheCorpers

We all know that at the moment, almost everyone is upset at the spate of avoidable deaths of youth corps members across the country. It did not start today – from natural disasters to rape and murder, ethno-religious crisis to post-elections violence, these young men and women serving their country find themselves easy targets to be killed and maimed – and not just in the north.
Yes, we are angry now but 1) How much longer will that anger last before we all go back to our merry lives and forget all about this? 2) How will anger actually lead to any solutions unless we do something?
The government has promised compensation for the families of those like Ukeoma AikFavour and Obinna Okpokiri who lost their lives, but this is not enough. Their deaths should not be in vain – it should lead a fundamental change in the way that the youth corps scheme is implemented.
The Future Project (which runs The Future Awards), in partnership with the National Youth CouncilAIESEC, SleevesUp Nigeria, Friends of Aik, Paradigm Initiative Nigeria and the EnoughisEnough Nigeria Coalition has decided to take up this cause.
We are aware that many initiatives have been undertaken in the past – but we believe it is time to move from anger and protest and to make this a broad-based national campaign. It is also a fine opportunity for us to put our hard won democracy to work – to move from protest and activism to advocacy and productive democratic lobby.

Introducing Barry Southgate: An Epitiome In The Making

A South African native, Barry Southgate moved with his family to New Zealand in his teen years before venturing on his own to Sydney, Australia, with the singing/dancing group, Jireh, in 2003.

With the group, Southgate performed at the annual Parachute Festival (the largest Gospel music festival in the southern hemisphere) for two consecutive years, and barely wrapped a seventeen-date New Zealand tour before the group disbanded, turning down a record deal.  The group’s split was a positive one, allowing its members to better pursue their individual goals, and Southgate wasted no time in doing so.

Shortly thereafter, Barry Southgate became widely known as a Top 24 finalist on the second season of Australian Idol.  His dynamic voice and striking good looks (Southgate is of African, German, Indonesian and English decent, and has modeled extensively) made him a clear favorite among judges and fans, alike.  He was chosen as the only non-Top 12 or Wildcard contestant to perform at the show’s grand finale at the Sydney Opera House, televised and viewed by millions.

Southgate’s time on Idol catapulted him from a virtual unknown to an in-demand singer, songwriter and on-air personality.  In addition to working on over a dozen recording projects, Southgate hosted a PR tour for Channel Ten, and was a celebrity guest alongside Neighbours star Dan O' Connor for Telstra's Australian Idol media presentation.  In one of his most memorable music experiences, Southgate performed before the Pope for World Youth Day '08, a televised event that reached half a billion people worldwide.

Locally, Southgate has worked with some of Australia’s finest artists, including Guy Sebastian, Stan Walker, Delta Goodrem and Paulini.  His songs have been featured on the debut album of Sasha-Lee (winner of South African Idol) and on LadyLike, the current album from German girl-band Monrose. Internationally, he continues to perform extensively with singer/songwriter/worship leader Darlene Zschech, and with Grammy Award-winning Israel & New Breed.

How have they contributed?

Well, music channels have established an African arm of the channels, even a couple of shows on radio have gotten on African radio all around the continent. Taofick Okoya presents The Children’s Fiesta 2011: Taking Tomorrow Today

The ‘Children’s Fiesta’ is a child empowerment program designed to celebrate the African child’s positive attributes through fun filled and enlightening activities.
This year’s edition will be held in a prestigious venue in Victoria Island. The inaugural event is themed ‘’Taking Tomorrow Today’’ and is specifically designed to inspire kids as well as enhance their career development skills for future.
After great deliberation and consultation we at Fico solution Ltd, (the organizers of The Children’s Fiesta and company behind the Queen of Africa project.) felt the need to extend the privilege of partnership to you in our inaugural children’s day celebration on Saturday, May 28, 2011

To the vast majority of people, toys are mere play item or pacifier for children a lot of thought does not really go into which toys best serve the purpose as a great tool towards a child's development.
A lot of is dumped in the mind of children subliminally both positive and negative which can be later detected in their character at a much later stage (especially in their teenage years). We need to see toys for what they really are…..A fun developmental tool.
Generations over the years having been passing on to kids toys in different shapes and sizes not fully realizing the psychological impact it has on them. In this age and time our thoughts, decisions and actions are influenced externally especially in young children.
There is a need for role models they can easily identify with in their likeness that can sharpen their moral values and bring them closer to their culture. Hence, Queens of Africa project; a social-cultural and educative innovation, with positive life changing initiative, set up to empower, promote and support Nigerian/African girl child.
The main aim of Queens Of Africa is present to the African/Nigerian girl child household dolls with African concept and origin with the view to position it as the world’s number one symbol of pride and entertainment. In addition, empower by adding value to the African/Nigeria child especially the girl child to be confident and ethically matured to become the ideal and perfect role model.
And what better way do we have than to usher in this project with the forthcoming children’s day! A day where we take time off our busy schedules to have fun with our kids and pay them the true attention they need. So ‘Children’s Day Fiesta 2011’ has been put together with a double goal of creating a platform for introducing ‘Queens of Africa’ as well as mark an event in grand style.
The event will see parents and their children participate in fun-filled activities and win ‘Queens of Africa ‘dolls. A onetime event, this will inspire and more so set the ball rolling for a clearer perception of African Dolls and similar art.
Developed by entrepreneur and philanthropist Toafick Okoya, the program has reached tens of thousands of children across Africa contributing significantly to education programs, particularly in Nigeria. The websitewww.queensofafrica.com has lots of information about the Queens and the wider work the program is involved in.
